One thing I've learned recently...

is that myspace is NOT completely dead. Don’t Forget to Write has a myspace (still the best way to promote your music online for free) and as we’re trying to make a name for ourselves I spend a good amount of time on there trying to get our music heard. Although myspace pretty much only still exists for bands, there is still a ridiculous amount of people on there. Most of those people are teenage girls who love those bands (that’s Don’t Forget to Write’s main demographic haha). If you go to the myspace of a popular pop rock band like The Maine you’ll find that hundreds of comments are left daily by teenage girls that love the band.

Let me get to the point of this post though

Tonight I logged onto our myspace page and was greeted by something that made my night. Some girl who had added us made Coast to Coast her profile song and left a comment saying “It’s now one of my life goals to see you guys play live.” Not only that but she also put lyrics to one of our songs (that I wrote) as her “status.”

Does this thing happen for big, popular bands all the time? Yes.

But does this happen for DFTW all the time? No.

It put a huge smile on my face and I took it as a huge compliment (especially quoting the lyrics). As a “writer” that meant a hell of a lot to me.

It wasn’t anything life changing but things like that are the best motivation that you can get. It makes you feel like somebody actually likes and respects what you’re trying to do and it helps make the endless and shameless promotion worthwhile.

oh no. not these commercials. It’s still on. I’ve googled an image. and written this. before this commercial was over.

I hear her wail “in the aaaarrrmss offf annn angeelll” and have to change the channel.
It’s too much. Too sad.

I HATE THESE COMMERCIALS. And they make me hate Sarah McLachlan
Don’t get me wrong, I love animals and want them all to be happy and healthy. But I just can’t stand these commercials. It’s too much

Ready for one of those “cannot be unseen” things?
Look at the bottom of the Washington Capitals logo
See anything interesting?
Like the outline of the DC Capital building?
I just noticed it tonight while I was at the game and I can’t get over it
How cool is that?
It’s like when you first see the arrow hidden in the Fed Ex logo and you never look at it the same way again
Props to the graphic designer who created the logo. Nice work

On my way to Baltimore this weekend my Ipod adapter broke and I was forced to listen to the radio for the majority of my drive. I almost always listen to my Ipod when I’m in the car and this meant that I got to listen to pop tracks I normally only get to hear at parties. On the whole I enjoyed it. Even though the station I was listening to seemed to have a 15 song rotation that they continuously repeated, I was entertained. There are definitely some pop songs out now that I really enjoy (and Don’t Forget to Write plans on covering). But there are so many that sound ridiculously and that are written incredibly poorly. Some songs felt like they had more autotune than real singing and there were a few lines in some of the tracks I heard that made absolutely no sense.

I’m not making some commentary on the state of music and saying that I hate everything that’s currently “mainstream” and on the radio. But it’s definitely frustrating sometimes when you take a step back and look at what’s currently popular and selling well.
